This is absolutely critical. We are not going to even start evaluating PAW until this functionality is provided.
At present a user typically will select a cost centre, account, time period etc, review a report, and then decide to take further action, typically by clicking an Action Button, that will run a process to update workflow cubes, perhaps transfer the data to another cube, or perform a calculation on the data, build a dimension, etc.
It is clearly a very poor user experience to have to then reselect the same cost centre, account and time period that they already selected when they click the Action Button. It is also potentially error prone, and users will inevitably review the figures for one cost centre and then end up running the process from the Action Button for a different cost centre.
Why is it useful?
|Who would benefit from this IDEA?||Anyone who actually uses Planning Analytics for Planning rather than just reporting.|
How should it work?
1) How should it work. It should be possible to link a selection on the sheet to a parameter in the TI process behind the Action Button.
2) Some of the benefit was outlined above. It is not possible to build any sort of workflow/action based system without this. Planning Analytics is for building planning systems and not just pretty reports. They must allow users to enter data and be able to run processes to manage that data, update workflow etc. I know that IBM have some sort of workflow planned but I have not seen any details of this, and cannot believe that it will be as flexible as being able to link parameters from the sheet to TI process parameters via an Action Button. The workflow may also not allow data to be processed and moved, or dimensions to be built which can be achieved via a TI process.
We already have systems built in TM1 Web that use Action Buttons to manage workflow, copy data from cube to cube, perform calculations, build dims, etc. Even if a viable workflow facility was introduced by IBM, we would still not want to move to this immediately and would prefer to migrate the TM1 Web Sheets to PAW using the existing processes. This would reduce the need for re-training of users, re-testing, etc.
The only work arounds for this I have seen are:
a) Users have to re-select again when they run the TI process - very poor
b) Push parameters into a cube and retrieve them in the TI process - also very poor - we already have processes built with parameters - why would we want to change existing processes. I last used this approach in TM1 version 7. It would be a retrograde step.
c) Put a TM1 Web sheet on every PAW sheet, get SUBNMs on that to synchronise with the selections on the PAW sheet, and put the TI Button on this TM1 Web Sheet. If you are going to do that, it would seem that you might as well do the report in TM1 Web and not use PAW.
|Priority Justification||Cannot build a planning system in PAW without it.|
