In the catalog there are categories (families) and items (products).
Some attribute are manages at "family" level and a Spec can be assigned to the hierarchy.
In the Spec some attributes can also be images (linked with DAM).
In AdminUI is available the possibility to use Specs at hierarchy level, but in PersonaUI/BusinessUI this feature is not available.

How should it work?
As in AdminUI with assigned to hierarchies.
In case of common attributes for many products, these attributes can be managed at hierarchy level (this will reduce attributes duplication).
In case of different hierarchies, is possible to apply specific Specs to avoid attributes moltiplication
