Add SQL-statement COMMENT ON as in Oracle or PostgreSQL

For some tables or columns it would be helpful to describe what the table/column is used for since the names are not always self-explanatory.

Although COMMENT ON is not part of standard SQL it would be helpful to have such a statement. The DOCUMENT clause is only available as part of CREATE FUNCTION for SPL routines but offers a similar approach.

    Dear Users and admins,

for documentation to every Table and every Field i have extra Tables where i can do this in every wished language.

I use this method to document Fields or Controls in any language and also an extra Field for Help und usage of the Fields.

If you build this functionality to the Database, please do not forget the possibility to describe it in more than one language and have some extra Fields to the Fields, like 'is every change from the Fieldvalue has to be documented' i named this Fkt History, Conditions, List or ID to a Query with possible Values, Fontname when print on Report, Fontsize when print, TipText, Fontsize, .... and a lot of other useful Props in Context to the field.

    Hello IBM/HCL developers!

Good idea! I agree that the documentation about the database should also be stored directly in the database.

    Best regards,

    Fedor Schönhals

Comment or Describe is available in nearly all other major (and many minor) database systems. Though this might be a "Low Priority" it is important for all and the longer we don't have it the longer it will take to be adopted and supported by 3rd party tools. So many DBA and Dev team members have either created custom systems or just use it as yet another reason to not maintain a proper data dictionary.

I've always seen this as a lack in the Informix SQL setup. I think I requested something like this on the phone with Informix Tech Support over 20 years ago. It gets my upvote!

This would be really handy. We have been looking around for a tool without much success (most are too expensive), and many of them keep the info separate from the database, so builtin comments would be much nicer. With over 1400 tables in our main database, and very little use of referencial integrity, it would be awesome to know where a column is linking to, if it has 1 char flag values then to know what they mean, why something is done a certain way... the list goes on for why it would help us. Currently, when a developer is stumped by an obscure table we have to search the code base to find out what possible values are, et.

Many competitor DBMS already have this functionality of documenting tables and table columns, that is putting ad hoc comments to describe the table and or the columns. Informix does not have this possibility which is great nevertheless table and c...
