With IIAS 7.5.2 a new HPSS function was enabled . This function is the option to change the Organizing Key of an already archived table using ALTER KEYS. Although this improves our current situation the drawback of this solution is that ALTER KEYS only works on table and not on partition level . This means in a situation where you have to re-organize because for example you are adding additional partitions you always have to re-organize the whole table and there is no option to re-organize just the added partition. This is time consuming (for us this takes 4-6 hours as the table has close to 2000 partitions) and also needs additonal space for the time when the ALTER KEYS is running, As this process is time consuming we are planning to schedule it once a month/quarter to get the table newly re-organized . This also means that we are having times when we have a mix of sorted and unsorted partitions which over the time hurts the performance of the running customer queries.
|Who would benefit from this IDEA?||Several persons would benefit. Starting from the DBA(easier to implement) , to the customer (needs less IIAS storage) and the enduser (always has the same performance as all the partitions are equally sorted )|
How should it work?
As we are adding a new partition (and deleting an old one) daily, the best solution for us would be if there would be a way to run the ALTER KEYS immediately after the daily archive just for the new partition so we always have all partitions sorted in the correct way. This way we wouldn't need monthly/quarterly ALTER KEYS on table level and also wouldn't need to save additional space just for running the ALTER KEYS process.
|Priority Justification||The customer accepts the 7.5.2. solution of the problem because it improves his current situation (which is very bad performance compared to IDAA 5,1) but a more flexible solution as mentioned above|
