New Access Type to Support Table Changes

Problem statement/ pain point: When making changes to Db2 tables there are times when you need to put the table space into a read only status to prevent update from occurring but allow the users the most time with the table being changed.  The problem comes during certain ALTER table or index operations and when you must drop and recreate the table that Db2 wants the table space in a read / write status.

Proposed solution: Create a new access for the -START DATABASE (Db2) command so that only individuals that hold DBADM authority on the database or System DBADM authority can access the table in read / write status, allow utilities to run, and everyone else that tries to access the table space is in read only.  The access could be called “DBA”.

Benefits/value: This will allow the DBA to be certain that no updates can occur to the table while they are in the process of performing table changes.

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request.

We have reviewed this request and believe it is a good candidate for the Db2 for z/OS product. However, it is not in our current roadmap and we are unable to deliver it within the next 36 months. Therefore, unfortunately, we will not be implementing this Idea.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team
