High CPU utilisation in CF structure xxxx_SCA

We have noticed that the structure DB2P_SCA in production the reason for high CPU consumption in the Coupling Facility is.
Our reporting proofs this behaviour.

We opened a case and did a deeper dive with IBM’s experts into.

At the end we can say that every XA transaction manager, like

  • Oracle Weblogic: every 5 minutes

  • Bealogic JBoss: every 2 minutes

  • Bitronix: every 60 seconds

  • Atomikos: every 10 seconds(our environment)

calls the “recover method” to compare its own list of 'open' transaction IDs with the database's list of 'prepared' XIDs(XIDLIST) held in DB2P_SCA for every application instance.

By application instance we mean a Java process - i.e. in the 'traditional' sense a WebSphere ApplicationServer instance. We have a lot of them.

  • 200 productive LAS server instances alone, which make a recovery() call once every 10 seconds.

  • Plus all remaining tower applications in Production.

During the investigation it was found that the behavior we noticed is not actually a Code Bug, but that there is still room for improvement to make reading open XIDs much more efficient.

This is very interesting for all customers, who are working with DataSharing.
