Workspace Db2 for z/OS

Reduce message flooding on system console using Db2 System Profile Monitoring for security profiles when detecting non-secure connections and WARNING_DIAGLEVEL3

This Aha idea is being opened on behalf of Commerzbank (Ute Kleyensteuber).

Security profiles are used with System Profile Monitoring filter LOCATION=*, ATTR1=WARNING_ DIAGLEVEL3, ATTR3=1 (TLS required) to discover all incoming non-secure connections from non-z/OS requesters. The customer has an automation task such that a DSNT775I triggers a Db2 Insert or Update (merge) in their tracking table that holds the number of profile warnings that occur by product id and IP address.

The DSNT775I is issued every time the profile warning occurs which floods the system console and causes a WTO storage buffer shortage. This also causes the automation task to get queued and for the Db2 insert into the tracking table to slow down, resulting in the eventually crash of the automation main task due to insufficient storage.

Using ATTR1=WARNING_ DIAGLEVEL1/2 is not an option as the DSNT771I and DSNT772I lack the product ID and IP address information needed to add to the tracking table.

The customer requests a reduction in the number of DSNT775I messages to prevent console flooding and resulting storage and automation task issues in order to effectively use security profiles.

    Dear Ute,

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS Idea. After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we will not include it as a candidate in an upcoming deliverable because it is not consistent with the product architecture. Our expectation is that monitoring tools would be extended to collect the required data through your existing monitoring tool as IFCID 402 data can be collected through the IFI interface and not through console scraping.

Consequently, we will not be implementing this Idea.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team
