Parameter to set REORG interrupt due to an unexpected wait

There are situations where a REORG utility can cause locks. A few weeks ago we suffered an episode of timeouts because a Reorg that was locking in the log phase. The Reorg was performing the consolidation of an ALTER DSSIZE in a UTS PBR. We didn't expect the Reorg started to cause timeouts on the Log Phase so our operations center canceled the Utility with a MVS command and this made the Reorg to lock the catalog tables.

We think that an option to set a general Timeout to interrupt the Reorg from an unexpected wait would have been useful for this situation. And it may be needed on DB2 v13.

In addition we have an installation in which there are many tablespace of Segmented type that at some point will end up being UTS PBG, those that already exist as PBG are increasingly larger and difficult to maintain using utilities such as Reorg, for that reason we believe appropriate to have a parameter that allows to configure a global Timeout in case of incidents during the Reorg.

Needed By Not sure -- Just thought it was cool

Dear Jordi, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request.

A REORG utility that is materializing online schema changes has a number of actions and updates to perform, invoking Db2 services to do so. We have to give the utility the ability to complete this process. Introducing an option that keeps track of the duration of the drain and then fails the utility once a time limit has been exceeded is not going to be possible since services invoked by the utility cannot all be enhanced to constantly check such a limit.

However, we are aware that in future more REORGs will be performing such work and we will continue to improve utility processing to minimize impact upon the Db2 environment and applications in particular. Such work is ongoing, but this idea is being marked as not under consideration at this time.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    The Db2 for z/OS team
