Improve DB2 sliding scale algorithm (SECQTY -1)

The maximum secondary space allocation of 559 cylinders for objects of 64GB or greater is too little causing the number of extents hits the limit of 255 or if using Extent Constraint Removal it would generated many extents. For the cases where the space required is very large DBAs need to monitor the objetcs and change secondary allocation SECQTY to 4GB to reduce the number of extents, causing extra work and being error prone. In one recent occasion, due to a failure in the monitoring process, one critical table reached the 255 extent limit causing a serious business outage. DBAs would like to have the option to set the value of the maximum secondary allocation the sliding scale algorithm will use for objects of 64GB or greater.

Dear Ricardo, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. Db2 for z/OS development has reviewed it and provided the following: Assuming the dataset is SMS managed, Extent Constraint Removal can be specified in the data class to allow up to 7257 extents. There are no plans to change the sliding secondary quantity algorithm.

In addition, plans exist within the DB2 tools space to provide a solution to alert to out of space conditions that can result in application outages. Therefore, we will not be considering this idea.

    Sincerely,

The Db2 for z/OS Development team
