Altering the default value of a global variable

Global Variables:

A global variable can be created with a default value. Each session that uses it will then instantiate a version of that global variable, with the default value and any change in the value is limited in scope to its unit-of-work. If the global variable happens to be used in a trigger, stored procedure, functions or even in a package, the default value is readily available at its initial use. In some cases, there may be a need to change that default value with a new value globally. Unfortunately, once a global variable is statically related to those objects, it cannot be dropped and recreated without having to drop the other related objects first. This may cause long outage to make that simple change.

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request.

After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we cannot include it as a candidate in an upcoming product deliverable because the request has a high implementation cost for CREATE OR REPLACE VARIABLE. Both LUW and Db2 i support CREATE OR REPLACE VARIABLE. The challenge is the need to invalidate dependent packages. As a consequence we will not be implementing this request.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team.  We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 for z/OS Team
