API to write dictionary to log

A number of our common customers run DB2 utilities from third party vendors and IBM replication solutions.  They are requesting that our LOAD and REORG utilities write the old dictionary pages to the log for later retrieval by a replication product, for compressed tablespaces.

Why is it useful?
Who would benefit from this IDEA? As a customer DBA, I want to use third party vendor DB2 utilities, and also IBM's replication products. Most of my production tablespaces are compressed. I am hampered in my use of the IBM replication products by data that is missing from that provided by third party vendor LOAD and REORG.
How should it work?

I discussed this issue with Haakon Roberts at IDUG EMEA.  He thought it might be possible to use the existing REPAIR WRITELOG capability, if the dictionary page data can be contained in a single log record.  Barring that, possibly an interface could be added to pass a data area including the data for several log records.  The other necessary part of the function is is updating SYSCOPY with the appropriate data; our utilities already write to SYSCOPY, so we do not need an API for that.

Today, customers are working around this by avoiding the need to run replication products for a timeframe including execution of our utilities, so that the dictionary pages need never be retrieved.  In some cases, they can be obtained from the previous image copy, although this is more expensive.

Idea Priority High
Priority Justification Several large customers are demanding this capability. Third party vendors cannot provide it until IBM provides a safe way to write a log record or records with the appropriate dictionary data.

It would help many of our common IBM and BMC Customers

Implementing this idea would be good for the z/OS platform and the Db2 for z/OS database system. In particular doing things that large customers need makes it easier to demonstrate the willingness of IBM and 3rd party vendors to meet their needs. However, as the Idea points out, without IBM providing the method, the 3rd party vendors cannot do their part. Thank you for considering this Idea.
