Using 64-bit common storage with IFI READS 306 (IFCID 0306)

When reading log records using IFI READS 306 we now have the capability of specifying a 64-bit pointer to common storage. The dsnwlir function call requires five parameters. The second parameter is an IFCA pointer and we must set the IFCAFLGS value with IFCARA64. The third parameter is the READS buffer and must contain an ECSA eight-byte piece of storage that contains a 64 bit pointer to common storage above the bar that is initialized with a 4 byte buffer length and the I306 eyecatcher.
This over complicates the interface and its set up by requiring two storage allocations, one for ECSA and a second for Key 7 64 bit common storage. It would be great to have the dsnwlir function recognize that the IFCARA64 value is set in the IFCA and then accept a non ECSA pointer to an 8 byte value that can be anywhere in 31 bit memory including on the stack in a C program. This would eliminate the possibility of an accidental ECSA memory leak even though it is a much smaller leak than before the use of 64 bit common storage.

It would also be useful if the two WQAL fields wqalwqls and wqalwql4 could use a 64-bit pointer. The DSECT seems to indicate that it was intended to be used that way but that this has not been implemented yet. I have tried it and it does not work. If both these changes could be made the 64-bit implementation would be much better and only one STORAGE allocation would be needed for both the read buffer and the WQLS list.

    Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. While we view all the enhancement requests we receive as valuable and we would like to implement all of them, in an effort to have maximum transparency we are not considering the ones that aren’t currently appearing on our 12 month product roadmap. This is not to say that these enhancements may not still be implemented at some point in the future as we do evaluate our requirements on the basis of customer demand and technical impact, to deliver maximum value to our customers.

    We appreciate your input to the Db2 for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 for z/OS.
