Parallel log file archival and retrieval

Log archival / retrieval is performed by a single thread. This can lead to log archival stuck e.g. if log file need to be retrieved to be added to online backup include logs.

This is also problematic if multiple log files need to be retrieved during database rollforward. This gets even worse if log file are compressed. The time for decompression (non HW accelerated) is that high that rollforward can get stuck easily. Parallel retrieval and therefore parallel decompression would eliminate this bottleneck.

We have a requirement to backup both the primary logs and the mirror logs. The primary logs are going to Commvault and the mirror logs are going to DISK.

However, this happens in serial in a single logging thread. So effectively the time to archive a log is time LOGARCHMETH1 + time LOGARCHMETH2.

This has always been a problem for us , even on-prem to TSM, because the log archiving rate and the log generation rate are near parity. Any increased load causes the archiving to fall behind.

Things are made worse if HADR is retrieving logs on the HADR primary because this is injected into the single logging thread further slowing the archiving.
