IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data & AI organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas that matter most to you

  3. Get feedback from the IBM team to refine your idea

PL/SQL compatibility - default values of procedure parameters

Currently DB2 does not fully support Oracle-style definition of default parameters in PL/SQL stored procedures (including those in functions).

The following definition works in Oracle, but requires modification in DB2:

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE myschema.pkg1 IS
FUNCTION GetParam(p_name VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR2;
END
/

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE myschema.pkg2 IS
PROCEDURE myProc(p_data VARCHAR2 := pkg1.GetParam('p1'));
END
/

DB2 requires two modifications in the code above:
(a) the schema name needs to be specified (while Oracle allows to reference packages in the same schema without schema prefix)
(b) the whole default number needs to be taken into braces "()", otherwise error SQL0104N is returned

The current DB2 version accepts the following:

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE myschema.pkg2 IS
PROCEDURE myProc(p_data VARCHAR2 := (myschema.pkg1.GetParam('p1')));
END
/

In case when the number of such constructs is large, this makes porting harder (and requires otherwise unneeded changes).

It would be good if DB2 would automatically add the schema of the current package to the CURRENT PATH (to enable the proper search of functions).

It would be also good to get rid of the need to add braces around the complex expression in the default value.
