Today, when our ETL jobs scan large amounts of data from a table with out using RS/RR isolation levels under certain conditions they see duplicate data and/or missing data. This could be caused due to the fact that rows that were already scanned could get moved ahead of the current position of the scan.
To overcome this issue, we are stopping replication and once the ETL jobs complete we will resume replication again, this is extremely inconvenient to do as some of our operational reports don't see near real time data until the ETL jobs complete.
With the support of snapshot isolation level we don't have to stop replication and impact other users while the ETL jobs are running. This is a very popular feature among all major RDBMS such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL etc.

How should it work?
Its already been implemented by majority of RDBMS vendors. This is not a novel concept that requires explaining on how it should work, however, below links provide a good over view of Snapshot Isolation Level.
