IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Clients

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Post your ideas

If you have not registered on this portal please register at http://ibm.biz/IBM-Data-and-AI-Portal-Register . To complete registration you will need to open the email you will receive from Aha to confirm your identity.

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas that matter most to you

  3. Get feedback from the IBM team to refine your idea

Help IBM prioritize your ideas and requests

The IBM team may need your help to refine the ideas so they may ask for more information or feedback. The offering manager team will then decide if they can begin working on your idea. If they can start during the next development cycle, they will put the idea on the priority list. Each team at IBM works on a different schedule, where some ideas can be implemented right away, others may be placed on a different schedule.

Receive notification on the decision

Some ideas can be implemented at IBM, while others may not fit within the development plans for the product. In either case, the team will let you know as soon as possible. In some cases, we may be able to find alternatives for ideas which cannot be implemented in a reasonable time.

Allow Table-Valued-Function (TVF) within DB2 SQL PL Module

Within a SQL PL MODULE, a Table-Valued-Function/TVF cannot be created, but outside of a MODULE, this can be done. This seems to be a restriction on MODULE functionality given that they are an analog to PL/SQL PACKAGES. Our request is to allow the use of TVFs within a SQL PL MODULE. Below is an example of what we are trying to attempt when we ran into the restriction.

Who would benefit from this IDEA? As a customer, I want to be able to access of Table-Valued-Function with SQL PL Modules so that I can deploy TVFs like I do Procedures and Scalar-Valued Functions.
How should it work?

In the example below, I show that a TVF deployed outside of a Module works just fine as it can be deployed to the database, but the same TVF cannot be deployed inside a Module and throws the error provided.

Example:

--TVF INSIDE MODULE

ALTER MODULE HELM_DATA_OBJECT.M_HELM_SYSTEM PUBLISH FUNCTION F_PEEK()

RETURNS TABLE (HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_CODE VARCHAR(16) ,

HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_NAME VARCHAR(256) ,

HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_DESCRIPTION VARCHAR(2000))

LANGUAGE SQL

READS SQL DATA

NO EXTERNAL ACTION

DETERMINISTIC

RETURN

SELECT HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_CODE, HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_NAME, HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_DESCRIPTION

FROM HELM_DATA_OBJECT.HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE

WHERE HELM_DATA_OBJECT.HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE.HELM_MD_SOFTDELETE_DATETIME IS NULL;

ERROR RETURNED:

SQL Error [42613]: Multiple or conflicting keywords involving the "RETURNS" clause are present.. SQLCODE=-628, SQLSTATE=42613, DRIVER=4.26.14

--CALL TVF INSIDE MODULE

SELECT *

FROM TABLE(HELM_DATA_OBJECT.M_HELM_SYSTEM.F_PEEK());

--TVF OUTSIDE MODULE

CREATE FUNCTION HELM_DATA_OBJECT.F_PEEK()

RETURNS TABLE (HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_CODE VARCHAR(16) ,

HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_NAME VARCHAR(256) ,

HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_DESCRIPTION VARCHAR(2000))

LANGUAGE SQL

READS SQL DATA

NO EXTERNAL ACTION

DETERMINISTIC

RETURN

SELECT HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_CODE, HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_NAME, HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE_DESCRIPTION

FROM HELM_DATA_OBJECT.HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE

WHERE HELM_DATA_OBJECT.HELM_SYSTEM_TYPE.HELM_MD_SOFTDELETE_DATETIME IS NULL;

ERROR RETURNED:

NONE

Idea Priority Medium
Priority Justification As a customer, I want to be create SOLID code and we believe that is best done by using SQL PL Modules to logically organize our code and leverage the PRIVATE/PUBLIC ability to ADD and PUBLISH functions/procedures within a SQL PL Module.
