Hive Connector with a Kerberos authentication

We need an option to connect to a Hive using Kerberos authentication. Previously the IBM offering team offered us to use a "Hive via Execution Engine for Hadoop" connector from IBM but it doesn't fully suit our need and here is why:

  • this "Hive via Execution Engine for Hadoop" connects to a Hive using the context of the specific user that's logged in CP4D at the moment and is accessing connected assets

  • we need to make a connection to a Hive from some specific user and that any other user of CP4D will be able to access assets that were added using this connection from that specific user

The third-party Hive connector would suit us unless it doesn't have an option to access Hive with Kerberos authentication.

We've raised a Case about this specific functionality previously: "CP4D 3.0 Hive connection using Kerberos" (TS003997166).

    Hello,

Hive with Kerberos is already supported. Please find details at: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cloud-paks/cp-data/4.6.x?topic=catalogs-apache-hive-connection

Hi! Could you please clarify your answer?

You're going to implement "shared connections" in CPD 4.0, is that right?

So, here is the desired use case:

    1) I create a connection via "Hive via Execution Engine for Hadoop" (because it's the only way to connect to Hive with a Kerberos authentication) and set "share connection" = true

    2) Another user uses the connection I've created. My credentials are stored inside this connection and when this user discovers Hive assets with this connection he accesses assets that are visible for my stored credentials and not his.

    Is that the correct understanding?

I double checked, and what is explained above works only for connections supporting "credentials" as an authentication method, which is not the case for "Hive via Hadoop execution engine".

So, right now, we don't have any plans to support the use case decribed above (use Kerberos to authenticate to Hive, and share the connection with all the users)

We'll explore what can be done for this in future release, but right now, it is not under consideration

In CPD 4.0, we're planning to introduce the support for "shared connections" for platform connections.

That should address your problem :

create a connection of type "Hive via Execution Engine for Hadoop", with the option "shared" in the credentials section (hence created once by a user, and can be reused by other users having visibility on that connection).

Unfortunately, it is not something we can provide on CPD 3.0.
