Global Environment Templates

I am writing to request the implementation of a feature that would greatly enhance the administrator experience on the platform – the ability for administrators to create/modify globally available custom environment templates.

Currently, our platform offers a limited number of default environments, and administrators are restricted to using the cpdctl for creating additional environments. However, we have encountered challenges with this approach, especially in the context of the transition from deprecated Git to the new Git version. The cpdctl path, as it stands, has proven to be cumbersome (see case number TS014780631). In addition to being challenging to implement, there is no way to add these environments at project creation. Current work around revolves around a nightly job that adds environments we think are useful to the end users project.

To address this issue and improve user efficiency, we propose the introduction of a graphical user interface (GUI/UI) that enables administrators to create globally available environment templates. This GUI/UI interface would help administrators create a variety of environment templates and help empower users to provision resources correctly, without the constraints of the current cpdctl path.

The benefits of such a feature are multifold. Firstly, the current creation and modification of environments available to all projects is cumbersome and does not work for new git projects. Secondly having globally available templates promotes consistency across users and projects, reducing the chances of errors in resource provisioning. Lastly, it significantly enhances resource utilization by encouraging users to explore and utilize a diverse range of environments tailored to their specific needs.

We believe that the implementation of this feature would not only address the current challenges but also contribute to a more user-friendly and efficient platform experience.
