Ability to call REST APIs as a data source in Watson Query

We are currently probing the capabilities of Watson Query to  support a data mesh architecture by acting as virtual layer over our heterogenous IT landscape, providing  uniformly structured data services to the consumers. A large number of our data sources provide REST APIs for data access and are thus not directly accessible by Watson Query. The proposed work around to use DataStage to copy the data to a database that can be accessed by Watson Query is not workable because we lose the flexibility that we wanted to achieve by using data virtualization in the first place. In our view, this is a very critical shortcoming that jeopardizes the success of our proof of concept.

What we would like to be able to do is to have Watson Query execute a REST call against a data source when queried by the user. Most of our REST interfaces comply with the Open API specification. Ultimately we would like to make this functionality so easy to use that a citizen developer is able to simply pull a REST data source into his project, map the fields of the response payload and execute the query as required.
