Bullet Chart Modifications

The latest version of the bullet chart in 11.1 has been modified to allow for repeating columns or rows based on a category which is great.

However there are a number of problems with the chart that we would like to see changed to better meet the needs of our business.

Firstly, the repeating rows do not need their own labelled x axis values. The repeating rows should exist in a single chart with a labelled x axis at the bottom same as it was in the legacy bullet chart. The repeating x axis is taking up far too much real estate which negates the power of the bullet chart to capture a lot of information in a small area.

Secondly, As each repeating row or category is now being treated as its own individual chart there is no way to order the rows by the metrics being used. For example I would like to order by the target value descending followed by the actual bar descending followed by the maximum range descending. This was also possible in the legacy bullet chart.

Thirdly, the colours are not able to be changed for the minimum, middle and maximum range metrics. This was also available in the legacy chart.

Lastly, it would be great if you could have more than one target line per bullet. This would allow for scenarios where there is for example a fixed forecast target and an adjusted target based on changing business needs. Each target could be coloured differently.

    • Agree with this proposal 100%.
    • Bullet charts are intended to convey a lot of information in a confined space.  The current Cognos version of the bullet chart consumes too much space on a dashboard, and there is no reason to do so.
    • The inclusion of an additional target line is also a valuable benefit as companies routinely measure progress against beginning-of-year forecasts and adjusted monthly projections.
    • Flexible use of colors for individual elements of the bullet chart is also a powerful way to convey information without consuming additional screen space.
