Report References and Bursting

Report references allow you to create booklet like reports containing other reports. Report references are awesome! With very little effort you can combine reports. And there is no maintenance, changes in the reference report are automatic in the booklet report.

However, one shortcoming of these booklet reports is bursting.

A common scenario is to combine bursted reports into a single booklet.

For example, if report 1 is bursted by manager and report 2 is bursted by manager. It isn't possible to create a booklet report that contains reports 1 &2 that is bursted by manager.

I understand why this is the case as it's technically complex and there are a whole load of what if's (What if report 1 was bursted by manager and report 2 was bursted by product, what should the booklet report do?). But we should never let perfect be the enemy of the good.

I think most Cognos users would be happy with a good enough implementation of this rather than a perfect.

A simple implementation of this feature could be to allow the author to create a master detail between the booklet report and the report references via a prompt master detail relationship. The reference reports could have a prompt answered by the booklet report and that could be used to filter the reference reports.
