Allow Rich Text Source Type to be External (Markdown or HTML support)

Problem

We have started creating a pre-report page that includes methodology, links to issues (we use GitLab), links to other reports, and most important highlights from the current report.

When adding the details to the first page, we use the "Rich Text" widget. Although it allows for multi-line entry, it is not very robust.

Workaround

Our current workaround is to simply create HTML documents outside of Cognos - and then import the HTML into the RichText field, or simply use the Rich Text widget as is (words with line breaks).

Solution

The current functionality of "Rich Text" does not allow for easy editing by users. There are no WYSIWYG functions (which could be a precursor to a full solution).

We would like to be able to point the Rich Text Source Type to a markdown (.md) file located in a GitLab repo (or any external repo).

Alternative Solutions (Co-solutions)

  1. Have a built-in WYSIWYG editor

  2. Have a built-in "Code" and "Preview" tab for the Rich Text

  3. Support HTML and MD

Impact

These impact all users on a daily basis.

Note

Although our ecosystem is large, we are trying to simplify our processes and store data with a focus on "single source of truth". Being able to keep methodology, highlights, and detailed items about reports in a Git repo would allow us to improve our processes, while maintaining version control and governance.

This is not currently on our roadmap. However, we would like to continue monitoring this idea through voting. The status of this request will be adjusted accordingly.
